وكشف كاتب السير الذاتية أندرو ويلسون أدلةً جديدة تشير إلى أن وفاة مونرو عام 1962 لم تكن نتيجة مؤامرة سياسية كما روجت العديد من النظريات على مدار عقود، بل جاءت- وفق ما توصل إليه- نتيجة إهمال طبي جسيم أدى إلى عواقب مأساوية.ووفقاً لتقرير نشرته صحيفة The Times، فإن طبيب مونرو الشخصي هيمان إنغلبرغ أخفى معلومات مهمة عن المحققين لسنوات طويلة، في محاولة لتجنب المسؤولية عن الأخطاء التي سبقت وفاتها.ورغم أن تقرير الطب الشرعي آنذاك خلص إلى أن الوفاة نتجت عن جرعة قاتلة من مزيج عقارين مهدئين هما «الكلورال هيدرات» و«النمبوتال»، فإن الطبيب أكد خلال التحقيقات أنه وصف لها العقار الأخير فقط، ونفى أي صلة له بالمادة الأخرى. غير أن ويلسون عثر على وصفة طبية أصلية موقعة من إنغلبرغ قبل وفاة مونرو بشهرين، تتضمن عقار «الكلورال هيدرات»، ما يضع روايته السابقة موضع شك.ويرى الكاتب أن الطبيب كان يعيش في تلك الفترة ظروفاً شخصية مضطربة بسبب خلافات زوجية حادة، وهو ما دفعه، بحسب تقديره، إلى التصرف بدافع الخوف والارتباك بعد وفاة الممثلة الشهيرة.وتكشف الوثائق التي استند إليها ويلسون جانباً آخر من معاناة مونرو في أشهرها الأخيرة؛ إذ كانت تمر بمرحلة نفسية صعبة عقب استبعادها من آخر أعمالها السينمائية، وتعرضت لنوبات اكتئاب متكررة أثرت في استقرارها النفسي.ويشير الكاتب إلى أن مونرو حصلت خلال الشهرين الأخيرين من حياتها على نحو 830 جرعة دوائية من أدوية مختلفة، وهي كمية وصفها بأنها كافية للتسبب في وفاة أشخاص عدة، معتبراً أن مثل هذه الممارسات لو وقعت في الوقت الحاضر لكانت قد تفضي إلى ملاحقات قانونية بتهمة القتل الخطأ.كما أعاد ويلسون تتبع جذور نظريات المؤامرة التي ربطت وفاة مونرو بعائلة كينيدي أو بأجهزة استخباراتية، ليتوصل إلى أن تلك الروايات تعود في الأصل إلى منشور سياسي صدر عام 1964؛ بهدف الإضرار بسمعة روبرت كينيدي، قبل أن تجد طريقها إلى الانتشار الواسع عبر كتابات لاحقة منحتها قدراً من المصداقية رغم غياب الأدلة الداعمة لها.وبينما استمرت الأساطير في ملاحقة قصة وفاة مارلين مونرو لعقود طويلة، يرى ويلسون أن التركيز على نظريات المؤامرة ساهم في طمس جانب أكثر أهمية في حياتها، يتمثل في معاناتها النفسية والإنسانية التي رافقتها منذ طفولتها وحتى أيامها الأخيرة، لتبقى قصتها واحدة من أكثر الحكايات إثارة للحزن والجدل في تاريخ هوليوود.
